The sun was low now, but the evening had an unusually heavy warmth to it; Polly, Ewan and Marina had decided that floating on their inflatables on the sea was the only place to be.

‘It’s great that you told him, cleared the air,’ Polly said in English.

‘And he’ll now understand about your family selling the house,’ Ewan said. Polly had already mentioned to Marina that she’d told Ewan about her father.

‘Well, I’m not sure about that,’ Marina said, twirling around in her orange segment. ‘Knowing him, he’ll probably twist things round to make it another reason why we shouldn’t sell it.’

Polly tutted and shook her head. ‘At least that can’t start tonight! Where did you say the boys were going?’

‘They’re going off in the car from San José to spend the night with an old friend who’s just moved to the city with his wife and baby. They invited me to tag along, but that would be weird.’

‘Well, we could keep you company—’ Ewan started.

‘No, no. I really don’t mind being on my own in the house.’

‘I suppose you… Ha!’ Water had splashed over Polly’s head. ‘Where have these waves come from? It’s been like a lake all day.’

Marina spotted another one advancing towards them and got her rubber-ringed self into position for riding it in towards the shore. ‘Yay!’

Ewan had done the same with his lilo, but had fallen off, all long limbs everywhere – much to Polly and Marina’s amusement.

‘You two are so cruel,’ he said, then he got on his lilo again, paddled up to Polly, and tipped her over. When she’d recovered and splashed him, they put their lilos one on top of the other and both clambered aboard.

Marina laughed. ‘That’s just too tempting!’ Inflatable wars commenced, with lots of laughter and spluttering as the sea joined in the fun.

‘I’m going to go mad after swallowing all this sea water!’ Polly said. ‘Might be time to go up.’

Marina looked at the beach, now in the shade as the sun dropped down behind the mountain. ‘Where is everybody? Do the turquitos usually go off to their… dwellings this early?’

‘No. But tonight they’re getting ready for the community meeting at sundown,’ Ewan explained. ‘Why don’t you come with us?’

‘You kidding?’ Marina said. ‘They’d string me up – I’m the evil hotel-building developer’s moll, remember!’

Polly and Ewan laughed then looked at each other. ‘Well, we’re working on that,’ Polly said. ‘And of course, now they’ve seen you spending so much time with Mati…’

‘I’ll be getting questions about two-timing, as well!’ Marina said. ‘No, I think I’m too tired to socialise. Maybe another time. I’ll be fine, maybe a bit of cupboard and then just chilling out with some music.’

‘Well, if you change your mind, the meeting’s at Vivi and Edu’s,’ Ewan said. ‘The couple who run the bar,’ he added, and Marina felt bad she hadn’t bothered to learn their names.

‘They live in the higher of the two taken-over abandoned houses,’ Polly said.

‘Ah, okay.’

A wave slapped Polly on the back of the head.
